honestly, I've been wanting one in this style for a while!!! I'm really glad he tried this style for the Toad...it's a nice surprise! with a conical tip too!
happy to have been able to purchase one of these!!

I can't wait to try it! I’m curious and excited!

In the meantime, I tried a new configuration!
aesthetically, it's nice.

I don't get on FC as much as I used to, but thought I would drop a line in here... I got my TOAD in the first batch and still use it as Daily Driver. It is just a beast! Simple and never fails, I just love it as much as ever.


Dan, I came across this old post and was curious, did anything ever develop from your upside-down heater concept? It really would be brilliant and versatile if you could pull it off!

I think this size of heater is best suited to microdosing, 0.05g to .1g loads. And so that limits the viability as a desktop IMO... but one of the ideas I am most excited about is a microdab rig heater.

Imagine this, the Toad is flipped upside down and with a WPA is plugged into a water tool. With the Toad in your water tool, the wooden bottom plate is now facing up. The wooden bottom plate is removed and replaced with an entirely new heater. This heater would be a heated SiC/quartz cup that faces up (instead of down like the stock heaters). So, instead of having to load the end of the stem, you can now dab directly into the open cup. This makes loading and cleaning much easier than a stem load system with the stock convection heater.

Instead of a WPA you could use a bent stem to bring the mouthpiece back up, kinda like a churchwarden pipe.

Surprisingly the button location feels ergonomic in both up and down orientations, so that's nice.

I think this would be a neat way for one device to be able to do dry herb and concentrates without having to use the same style of heater for both tasks. This has been an idea I've had for a while... but the Toad really makes it much more possible because of the simple rectangular bottom and magnetic pins that can be used for holding different types of heaters.

In a way, I'm seeing the Toad as a possible core unit that could adapt to fun new add-ons, kinda like a Lego brick. But we will have to see... ha. For now they're just ideas!

the two custom stems I ordered from him are my favorite options...
I just ordered a third one that was in his catalog... I don't know the color.... but both were magnificent so.... surprise!
I'm really not a fan of glass but I'm starting to have an interesting collection of stems for my Dan devices 😁

Been on the waitlist for close to 2.5 years and my number just came up, I'm in batch 13. Pretty sure I want the pearwood stem since it just looks great, but not sure if I want the hi or low heater.

I'm guessing this is covered somewhere in the 75 pages, (perhaps someone can point me to it, I couldn't find it) but how do the high and low heaters compare?
Does either or hotspot?
I combustion possible in one or both?

For reference I have a Milaana 3, SplinterZ on a tc mod and P80. I find I get the best flavor low temping on the Splinter Z, but I have to load high in the "knuckle" and stir after every couple pulls to avoid hotspots.

Any chance I can low temp or even high temp without hot spotting with the Toad?

Also does the stem get very hot from longer sessions, even with the low-temp heater?

As this is an unregulated vape, combustion is always possible, but on the whole, low heating is very docile and delivers very good, sweet long-lasting flavors.
High heating is a bit more aggressive and less forgiving and the risk of combustion is bigger. As with all heating methods, once the right technique has been found and practised, the risk is greatly reduced.
In all cases, Dan's heaters require a preheating time to express their potential, between 3 and 8 seconds depending on the heater and expectations. The mi3 is more responsive, for example.

I have both heaters, and use the high heater 99% of the time.

I think for most people, the high heater will deliver the experience that you're after. The low heater is nice if you're really wanting to prolong flavor as much as possible, but the high heater is what you'll want for faster heat up and quicker extraction.

I don't struggle with hot spots with the high heater per se, but it is definitely possible to char/combust in the high heater if you don't have your technique down. The low heater is much more forgiving in that regard.

Always possible, basically it is the rate of speed for heat up, and max heat level, but the longer you hold the button the hotter it will go, with a plateau eventually

Hotspotting is pretty much depending on your technique using the trigger and more importantly how you inhale, along with how you load, grind and pack... This will be similar although the bowl is much smaller with narrower diameter stems, although they match the heater diameter of course... So yeah it's going to be dependent on your own technique as this is a very manual vape

Near the bowl it can get hot with back to back hits just like any other glass stem based conviction vape, mouthpiece is long enough to stay cool at the tip though

I tend to have hotspoting issues with the high heater because I'm often doing something else while vaping. It takes a single misstep and you can scorch the load and the taste will be deteriorated afterwards.

Low heater requires more effort but the risks are reduced. Since I prefer flavour over getting strong effects and I don't want big hits, for me the choice is simple.

YMMV.
