To assist possibly; heat above the two lines on the head, closer to the VI, this will move the indicator a bit quicker, the lower you heat on the head the slower the VI is to react. This should give you a bit more control over the heat soak to avoid combustion. I cant get past the second notch...

a lil lube will help the orings slide in and out.. not too much just a film will do wonders for your issue.
